Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a procedure to reduce the size and weight of the breasts by removing excess fat, skin, and glandular tissue. Immediately after breast reduction surgery, you should expect to have bruising, swelling, and tenderness in the breasts. This is normal and should lessen over time. Most patients need only mild pain medications if any.

Most patients can resume office work and normal errands around 7 days after surgery, and possibly sooner. You should avoid strenuous work and exercise, especially activities that involve heavy lifting, for a minimum of 2 weeks after surgery to allow proper healing. If your job is physically demanding, you may need to take some time off work to recover. Dr. Do will discuss these and other considerations during your free consultation.

If your incision is in the crease under your breast, you should expect this area to be inflamed and tender for a month or more. This could make wearing an underwire bra uncomfortable. Your breasts will also take some time to settle, so you should wait to be fitted for a new underwire bra for a couple of months. You may find it more comfortable to wear a stretchy post-operative surgery bra for several weeks after your surgery.

In some cases, health insurance may cover breast reduction surgery if it is deemed medically necessary — for example, when large breasts cause documented chronic back, neck, or shoulder pain, skin conditions, or postural problems. Coverage varies by insurance provider and plan.
