How to Tell if You Need a Breast Lift

Do My Nipples Point Downward? This happens when the skin at the base of the breast becomes stretched and the weight of the breasts pulls the nipple downward. A breast lift can help raise the nipples to a more youthful-looking position on the chest.

Are My Breasts Asymmetrical or Misshapen? Some women are born with or develop asymmetrical breasts. One breast may be larger than the other—up to a full cup size—or sag or droop more than the other. Some women may also have tuberous breasts and want a rounder shape. Breast lift surgery can dramatically improve breast shape and symmetry.

Does My Nipple or Areola Sit Below the Crease Underneath My Breast? Slide a sheet of plain paper underneath your bare breast until one edge sits against the crease under your breast (inframammary fold). How Breast Lift Surgery Works

During a breast lift procedure, the surgeon removes excess, stretched-out skin; reshapes the breast tissue; and raises the nipple and areola. This creates a firmer and more youthful breast contour. Some women also opt to have the size of their areolas reduced, which can give the breasts a more proportional look.

Surgery Techniques

There are several different surgical techniques to lift the breasts. Which procedure your surgeon decides is best will depend on your specific situation—your breast shape, fullness, and the expected results. If you have significant sagging, an anchor lift can help reshape and lift the breasts to their natural placement on your chest. The surgeon will remove excess skin and sagging tissues. There are three incisions with an anchor lift: one around the areola, one vertical incision from the bottom of the areola to the crease of the breast, and one incision along the crease (inframammary fold).

The procedure gets its name from the anchor-like incision lines, which also look like an upside-down T. While there is some visible scarring, with proper care scars will fade over time. The anchor lift procedure is ideal if your goal is to have a breast reduction with a lift since it allows the surgeon to move a substantial amount of tissue and reposition the breasts.

Women who have mild sagging can benefit from a periareolar or “doughnut” breast lift, which involves making two circular incisions around the edge of the areola. The surgeon removes one of the circles of skin, pulls the surrounding skin taut, and reattaches the skin to the nipple. It’s called a “doughnut” breast lift because of the shape of the skin that is removed. Many women choose to have a doughnut breast lift in conjunction with a breast augmentation. It typically leaves a minor scar that becomes harder to see over time.

Breast lift surgery typically takes 2-3 hours and is performed in an outpatient setting. Depending on how extensive your surgery is you may need to spend the night in the hospital.

After surgery, you’ll need to rest for 1-2 days. It’s normal to have bruising, swelling, and tenderness after surgery that lasts for 2-3 weeks. You’ll wear a pressure garment or specialized bra 24 hours a day for 3-4 weeks, and you must avoid gym exercise for 4 weeks. You’ll also need to avoid sun exposure on the breasts for a few months and take special care of your incision sites with scar-reducing creams and silicone gel sheets.
